Lagos has always been inhabited since times, as evidenced by several archaeological sites. The primitive name of the city – Lacohriga – points to a Celtic origin, about 2,000 years ago. C., being, during an extended period, port frequented by Phoenicians, Greeks and Carthaginians.
0 century XV is the golden century of Lagos. For about forty years, a city, due to its location in front of Africa, becomes the port of departure and arrival of the ships that, year after year, I am discovering a coast of the continent. The center of commerce of exotic products, ivory, gold and silver from Africa, Lagos sees new churches being built, the number of houses increased, the number of merchants and national and foreign bankers to grow.
Although the earthquake of 1755 caused great damage, Lagos preserved in its streets and squares much of the charm of a secular city.
In the place of the old medieval city – a quadrilateral defined by walls and as streets of São Gonçalo and October 5 -, as houses show their character very much in the windows and doors, in the forged irons of the balconies, in the shaded spaces and Freshness created by narrow streets and in patios where fig trees, vines and flowers grow.
The part of the city born from the expansion of the XV to XIX has its Heart in the Square Gil Eanes and not meander of streets where they are discovered tiles to the taste “new art”; Palatial houses with noble facades, the whiteness of walls cut out by the windows. The Avenida dos Descobrimentos, on the other hand, allows you to know the profile of the city, widen as you can see horizons of the sea, enjoy the hustle and bustle of fishing boats and mirrored waters of the marina, reflecting masts of yachts.
Today, a city maintains its old cosmopolitanism and an old complicity with the sea, responding to the challenges of the present, with respect for the past.
It is worth visiting its churches, museums, castle and ramparts from where you can enjoy beautiful views over a city, a bay and a mountain range of Monchique. The Ponta da Piedade is a reference of obligatory visit, as well as beaches in this county that are of the most beautiful of the region. A boat trip through the caves and marine caves, provides unforgettable moments of observation of the Gold Coast, ideal for a water sports practice.
In Lagos, a sea air accompanies its traditional gastronomy, namely in fish soups, sausage or conch. Still, a mixture of mussels, cockles or clams, as well as some sardines, a clam chowder or a feijoada of horns, not forgetting the delicious tuna steak or a spicy cataplana, are dishes that make up a rich gastronomic menu of Lagos .
