A Guia is a parish belonging to the touristic municipality of Albufeira, in the golden Algarve region.
The origins of the locality are unknown, thinking that it will already be occupied for long periods, especially in the Roman occupation of the region.
The importance of the locality will have come from its Hermitage of Our Lady of the Guide, previous to century XVI, where there is said to have existed an apparition of the Virgin Mary, attracting since then many visitors and faithful.
With the growing tourist industry, Guia has developed in recent years, trying to respond to the growing demand of the great tourist center of Albufeira, nowadays offering various tourist and complementary infrastructures such as luxury tourist complexes, a large shopping center Or the famous “Zoomarine”.
The Guia de Albufeira is proud of its important heritage, especially the aforementioned Hermitage of Nossa Senhora da Guia, which dates back to the 16th century but was very destroyed after the great earthquake of 1755, with great restoration work in the 18th century , Thus becoming one of the great Baroque monuments of the Algarve. Equally interesting is the 17th-century Mother Church and the Hermitage of St. Sebastian, built between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, dedicated to the Saint who contributed to the disappearance of the disastrous Black Death.
Every year in October there is the Guia Fair, with origins in the old Pilgrimage to the Chapel of Our Lady of Guia, which for many years attracted countless faithful from all over the Algarve who came here to make their promises and requests to the Virgin Mary.
